Inside Ibiza with Roger Sanchez: Episode 3

Stealth Records presents: Inside Ibiza with Roger Sanchez

Written & Directed by: Terry Church

Camera/Edit: John Taws

After much awaiting, episode 3 of Inside Ibiza with Roger Sanchez is here. Throughout this series, director Terry Church takes you behind the scenes of Roger's DJ life and his relationship with the White Isle.  From Roger's residency at the island's superclub Space, to events for his record label Stealth, his studio sessions, and the characters around him, Inside Ibiza is a documentary that aims to get to the heart of DJ culture and Ibiza. For this episode, we're taken to view an entirely different aspect of Roger's career, to meet the people that attribute to Roger's vast success.

Catch episode 3 below, as well as Church's director's notes that dig further into the details of this particular episode. Watch previous episodes on Roger's Youtube channel here.

Director's Notes: Episode 3 of Inside Ibiza with Roger Sanchez

The first two episodes of Inside Ibiza focused mainly on Roger Sanchez' DJing activities and the clubbing life that he leads in Ibiza, so for this third episode I decided to take things in a completely different direction.

This episode begins with a scene of Roger's Events Manager, Maarten van't Veld (who often is accused of having the easiest job in the world), who floats into shot on an inflatable in a pool with a beer, whilst he mutters something about having a "hard life". This scene sets the tone for the episode perfectly.

I decided to add scripted humour to Inside Ibiza because DJs and clubbing industry folk in general tend to take themselves too seriously. A lot of the time, DJ interviews are pretty dry, and quite often they fail to capture the interest of anyone outside of the electronic music scene. Writing in humour, and setting up some scenes/interviews to be deliberately funny was my attempt to address these problems. I also hoped that it would allow us to show some of the unique and fun characters that surround Roger Sanchez in Ibiza.

When it came to presenting the humour it would have made little sense to fill the entire episode with jokes (after all this is meant to be a fairly serious music documentary series), but by juxtaposing it in between scenes of Roger working in his music studio, actually elevated the humour to another level.

Whilst Roger is working hard on beats, and enthusiastically explaining his set up and technique to the camera, we keep returning to interview snippets and scenes of Roger's staff fooling around like two naughty schoolboys.

What's brilliant about this contrast (at least for me as a director), is that it is probably the closest that the documentary series comes to capturing the emotional truth of all three characters. Roger is the ever-diligent music producer who is obsessed with sound and rhythm. He is motivated by DJing experiences. Maarten is a beer-swilling Dutchman with a biting, sarcastic sense of humour and an unconventional work ethic. Jermaine is a former NYC nightclub doorman turned DJ touring roadie, a man who has never taken life too seriously.

All three are endearing personalities, and I hope that by the end of the episode you feel like you really know them.

The track that Roger builds throughout the episode in his studio is 'Animalz', a new club single produced under his S-Man moniker.

The S-Man takes his world-famous party to Space Ibiza for 4 dates and 3 in Mykonos, Greece

Release Yourself presents Flashing Lights

  • Celebrating his 10 years of Ibiza residency last year, Roger Sanchez and his Release Yourself concept heads out on European tour.

  • Ibiza parties move to the legendary Space

  • Guests and collaborators to include Sidney Samson, Far East Movement, Mark Knight, Chris Lake & Kaskade, with more guests to be announced.

  • Roger performing a classic house set

  • Massive singles featuring exciting international artists

  • Release Yourself 11 coming soon

After 10 years of rocking Ibiza all summer, every summer, Roger Sanchez’s world-famous Release Yourself party will head out on a European tour in summer 2011, with a new home for its handful of parties on the White Isle.

Release Yourself has grown from the name of a record (Sanchez’s 1996 classic Release Yo Self) into a globally recognized brand that is synonymous with quality house music and damn good parties. Events around the world, his hugely successful radio show, podcast and of course his long-running compilation series all bear the same name – a hallmark for all things classy, grooving and feel-good.

Release Yourself: Flashing Lights will take over the legendary Space Ibiza for 4 exclusive Monday’s Calling dates (July 18th, August 1st, August 29th, and September 12th), where Roger will play on the club’s legendary Terrace – a local institution and one of the most prestigious dance floors to play to in the world.  You can also check out Roger playing a special debut show at Café Ole on September 17th and 2 more special appearances at Monday’s Calling on June 13th and August 8th. It’s quality not quantity this year, making these select special parties a must for anyone on the island around those dates.

Guests and collaborators planned for the Ibiza season include Roger’s recent “2gether” collaborators Far East Movement and Dutch house hero Sidney Samson (July 18th), a Roger Sanchez classic house set (August 1st), Toolroom legend Mark Knight (August 8th), standout producer Chris Lake (August 8th) and US house sensation Kaskade (August 29th), with more guests to be announced!

3 shows in Greece’s party capital Mykonos are also confirmed next to a show at super club Ministry of Sound, London. More dates across the continent are to be announced very soon.

Flashing Lights describes the way that the S-Man plans to release his new content across the rest of the year: in vibrant bursts. It’s all about giving back to the fans in 2011, every flash of light from his fingertips bringing new dates, remixes, productions and compilations. Keep your eyes peeled as he’s got a lot of activity to announce, with the tour sitting alongside his monthly Release Yourself residency at Marquee in Las Vegas, the US clubbing capital, and dates far and wide across the globe, including RY parties at London’s Ministry Of Sound and Miami’s Mansion.

Roger will be unleashing some new club bangers to accompany the tour, and his next compilation, Release Yourself 11 is on the horizon as well. In addition, RY Radio Show celebrates its landmark 500th episode in May – making this a seriously busy summer for Roger Sanchez. Not that it phases him one bit – when you do something you love, it’s hardly tough work!
